I seem to have hit a real bad boredom streak, I log on and for some reason with in minutes I am bored to tears, probably because things have been very relaxed over the christmas period. I am not entirely 100% sure whether I am going to renew my account or not, still toying with the idea!!!!

Very well said As Kchaka has said we were all present to witness a friends account being hacked and it is a frightening thing :S I would certainly hate to think it happened to any of us again. Most of us have purchased an "Authenticator" to add just that little bit more security to avoid hackers.
Hacked accounts are mostly able to retrieve once they have been taken by a hacker but i dont want to run the risk.

'lo everyone. We've had a few guild members hacked recently so I thought I'd just make a post giving everyone some security information they might not be aware of.

What to do if you get hacked

If you try to log in and find your password has changed the first thing you'll want to do is to get your accout back obviously. Use the "Forgot your Password?" feture on the account managment section. When you're back in your account ticket a GM to get your stuff back.

If you have any trouble with this process (You've forgotten your secret password etc) you should use the webform below. If you have a friend irl who also plays, getting them to ticket a GM can sometimes help, but I would only suggest doing this if you know them irl and can get their account name etc. A GM won't be able to give any details or info on your friends account, but they can look into it.

Extra Security

Some of you may be aware, some of you may not, but Blizz recently launched the "Blizzard Authenticator". You have to pay for it, and some people won't be able to afford it, or they just will not want it. But its a very usefull thing that makes it almost impossible to hack your account.

I've now bought one after seeing so many friends get hacked, so you might want to consider it as well. I had a lot of questions about how it worked at first, so below are a few links you might find interesting if you are thinking of buying one.

How to spot a hacker

Recently, like I said, we've seen a few guild members be hacked. They seem to be done by the same company / person and it uses a bot. I'll just give a little bit of info about how the bot behaves, so you can spot them.

They log on in the middle of the night. Usually about 04:00 server time, if you see someone log on at this time and they don't respond to you that may be the first sign.
They have been known to whisper people in the guild asking if they want to make quick gold, but don't usualy talk after that.
When they've been to the guild bank, stolen what they can and vendored all non-dps gear the bot takes over.
It will make its way via flightpaths to a farming zone (All of the hacks I've seen so far have been to the top left of Borean Tundra, if you go there you can usually see a few hacked accounts running around in the exact same pattern, farming elementals)
And it will stay here untill the account is back in the hands of its owner.

If you see any of that behaviour on a friend or guild member you may want to write down details and times, and possibly ticket a GM to let them know.

One last thing

Just wanted to mention, these hackers aren't in it out of malice or to get at people. They just want money (Real money). Its not usualy a person its a gold selling company.
Buying gold, gives these people a reason to hack. I know most people don't, but I have seen a few people even in the guild who have talked about buying gold.
If you buy gold, you'rve giving these people a reason to hack accounts. So please don't. It could be you, or your friends, or your guild mates next.

Okay, my name is Mike, but call me Kitari, always. Normally I wouldn't think of sending in a guild application until I was level 80, but levellings going to be very fast for me. I've played a Blood Elf Hunter on Anachronos since February, clearing most of TBC content and obsessively wasting my life away on World of Warcraft.
I created this character at about 1AM last night, and within an hour, I was level 10. This is because me and Lazerah are levelling with Recruit a Friend - I made him make a new account . The last time I used RaF, I was 60 in a week, 70 in a week after that. The unfortunate downside of this is that I wont know my class from the next one. I wont even know what a Consecrate is You want that cloth piece? Tough, it's mine ^^

Okay, I wont quite be that bad. I'm a fast learner. But yeah, thats all I really have to say. Thanks for reading =)
